Dermal sense organs detect the taste due to the presence of papilla or taste buds in species of various organisms like sole fish. These organs belong to a category of olfactory organs. These dermal organs have several essential evolutionary significance and adaptations as they are found in various regions like the oral cavity, pharynx, gill rakers and lips.There is a chemoreception response in the nasal cavity that helps in the feeding response in these fish during night. There are neuromasts present in the nasal region that initiate in the process of taste and food chemoreception. There is a high density of papilla located on the abocular side of the head of the sole fish. There is a layer of epidermis with connective tissue and blood vessels that form a neuromast with connections for sensing food taste. There are cilia present towards the outside. If these taste organs were blocked then it caused difficulty in the sole fish for recognizing food in the environmental surroundings. These organs get developed during the larval stage of development and metamorphosis of the fish embryo in the evolutionary development and can detect the other smaller organisms present in the vicinity at night.
