In eukaryotic body there are two kind of cell division happen, mitosis cell division and meiosis cell division. Mitosis happen in all kind of somatic cells but meiosis happen only in germline cells. Before both the cell division, one round of DNA replication happen and for the mitosis cell division one round of DNA replication followed by one round of cell division so the chromosome numbers are equal to the mother cell in two daughter cells but for the meiosis cell division, one round of DNA replication followed by two round of cell division so four daughter cells are generated containing half of the chromosomes of the mother cell each. Meiosis has two division phases namely Meiosis I and Meiosis II. In meiosis I the homologous chromosomes get separated and give rise to two daughter cells having half of the chromosome number of the mother cell (half division) and in the meiosis II the sister chromosomes gets separated where total four daughter cells are generated (equal division). Meiosis II is the equal division (chromosome number is same between the preceding cell and the daughter cells) , so people say that meiosis II is alike with mitosis. Meiosis cell division play a very crucial role for genetic variation. This is achieved by the recombination between the non-sister chromatid of the homologous chromosomes which is exchange of part of the DNA between the maternal chromosome and the paternal chromosome and by the independent assortment of the paternal, maternal and recombinant chromatids.
