Answer #1

A) A rationalist strategy essentially involves studying the current competitive environment and then deciding on a course of action to remain competitive in the future. This ensures that the actions we take are in alignment with the broader objective and so it would propel breakthrough innovation or a change in the business model itself. For example - a shift from film-based photography to digital photography.

B) An incremental approach on the other hand involves studying the current state, understanding the reasons and then undertaking actions to improve the current state. This cycle continues to go on incrementally to produce ultimately a better quality of output in the future. For example, the incremental innovation of creating better fuel efficient cars is a type of incremental improvement.
