In 2050 preparations are underway for a manned spacecraft visit to the planetary system of the star Alpha Centauri a distance of some 4 light-years away. Provisions are placed on board to allow a trip of total duration of 16 years. Neglecting the period of acceleration, turn-around and visiting times as negligible.

a) How fast must the spacecraft travel if the provisions are to last? (leave your answer in term of c).

b) How long does the trio last, 1)as measured by an observer ib Earth? 2)as measured by the astronauts on board?

ANSWER 3A, B, AND C! 3. The star system that is closest to the earth is Alpha Centauri. It is 4.37 light years away in Earth's reference frame. The fastest spacecraft humans have ever launched is New Horizons, which sent us sweet pictures of Pluto in 2015. It attained a speed of 45 km/s relative to the sun. That's fast, but even at this rate, interstellar travel is not practical. a) Traveling at 45 km/s, how long, in years, would...

Time Dilation Time Dilation is a relativistic effect where time measured in two reference frames with relative motion is different, even when the clocks in both reference frames are initially synchronized. Clocks are synchronized when the same time is measured when their inertial reference frames are at rest relative to one another (meaning there is no relative velocity). When t0, the clocks in the two reference frames are synchronized at the origin. The Proper Time (To) is the time difference...
