Maslow’s hierarchy of needs theory is a flawed model. Discuss this statement using examples to support your answer.
According to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, there are five levels of human needs that are depicted as hierarchical levels in a pyramid. Starting from the bottom, the needs include physiological, safety, social, esteem and self actualization needs. Physiological needs include the basic needs that are required for life like food and shelter. Safety needs include the needs to ensure safety like job security and social needs include the need for love and belonging. Esteem needs include the human needs for recognition and status and self actualization include the need for growth. Though the pyramid covers most of the needs required by an individual, the model is a flawed one because Maslow states that lower needs should be satisfied before fulfilling the higher order needs to motivate an individual. But the motivating needs are different for different people according to the situation, time, field of work etc. Some of them may give more importance to esteem or self actualization needs than social needs and some of the employee value growth needs than safety needs. For example consider the case of an artist. The artist may not have the basic needs satisfied, but he/she may be motivated by recognition in the field of expertise than monetary rewards. Another example is the case of a soldier. He cannot give importance to his safety needs while protecting nation and people from enemies and his esteem needs may be more important than the safety needs. Hence the model does not address these difference in motivating factors and the reason why some are given more importance than other is not clear.
