Discuss the concept of Generational Differences in the workplace today. Identify the various generations currently working today and the issues that arise as a result.

Generational differences in the workplace refer to the differences in the people of different age groups who become a whole generation and their mindsets, behaviours, habits, customs, thoughts, responses to situations. Everything from the way they dress, work or interact can be different. This difference can cause an unhealthy work environment if not managed strategically. The generational differences can make employees form groups and create a monopoly to work in their own ways rather than adapting to the work environment. But if handled properly then the best traits of each generation can help the organization grow and give productive outcomes. The different generations seen today are:

- The traditionalist- 1925 to 1945- This generation works with formal rules and in a hierarchical environment. They focus on working hard with dedication and sincerity following the strict norms in the workplace.

- The baby boomers- 1946-1964- They work with fewer rules but more hard work and integrity. They focused on career growth and development. they questioned on issues rather than following the norms like the traditionalists. They work and take decisions in teams with cooperation.

-Generation X- 1965-1981- They are more casual about work life and have value for life outside work. They balance work life with personal life and focus of career development with it. They believe in giving and getting frequent feedbacks and look for entrepreneurial opportunities for self-reliance.

-Generation Y- 1982-2000- Also known as Millennials this is the youngest generation seen at the workplace. They are motivated, goal-oriented, more open to risks that give better outcomes. The belief in multitasking rather than working under confined norms. They aim at getting their tasks done and enjoying their life with it. They are more casual and take quick decisions. They look for the easiest and convenient ways of doing tasks.

The issues that arise with the generational differences in a workplace depend on the work culture and the generations working there. The generation of baby boomers is not very well versed with computers and new technologies whereas the new generations want to rely more on technologies for daily communication and work. Generation X and Millennials are more casual about working and prefer flextime in work hours. The old generation might find it unprofessional to not be at the office every day on time. The traditionalists and baby boomers prefer doing tasks individually based on their skills whereas generation X and Y focus on group-based work and frequent feedback. The methods to interact and communicate also becomes an issue. The older generation prefers to have formal emails and memos written for every small message. The new generations consider text messages and informal conversations also equally enough if the other person gets the right message delivered on time. The ways of taking decisions and giving opinions on issues also vary with generations. With such vast differences, it becomes difficult for the generations to work together under one roof in a cooperative way. If this issue arises more often and is not handled properly then the work and efficiency of the employees all together is effected adversly.
