The U-tube manometers measure the presupre relative to atmospheric pressure. The pressure will be positive when aplliap pressure is more than atmospheric pressure and the pressure will be negative when the applied pressure is less than atmospheric pressure.

Disadvantagesof U tube manometers.

  1. The measuring fluid should be of low density when pressure relatively close to the atmospheric pressure is measured, because if the fluid of higher density is taken, then it will not rise to a sufficient height for a reading to be taken.
  2. When you have to measure high pressure you will have to use a higher density liquid, otherwise the liquid will rise very high and come out of the tube, so you have to change the liquid everytime for the different requirements.
  3. Since one end of tube is exposed to air, the liquid can catch some impurities from atmosphere.
