Matched pair study is basically used to eliminate unwanted differences between two samples that might obscure the results. We can cite one example,

suppose you want to test the effects of excercise on your dance performance. You may design your experiments in 2 different ways:

1. You may conduct a dance performance to 2 different groups of students; First group of student may dance without taking proper excercise and the other group have taken proper excercise. We can then compare the results of the 2 groups.

2. You may use only one group of students. First, that group may dance without taking proper excercise and then the same group will dance after taking proper excercise. we can then compare one student's dance performance at both conditions.

The problem with ways (1) is that the differences in results might be due to the fact that the students from the 2 groups are just different (sex, height, age, etc.) and not whether they have excercised or not. On the other hand,ways (2) would not have this issue since we are using the same group of students for both conditions i.e without excercise or with excercise and comparing the performance of their dance . The assessment would be more accurate. This is the advantages of matched pair study over two independent sample study.
