The enzyme catalyzed reaction proceed with energy Maxima i.e activation energy barrier. If we add the activator which is generally supposed to be increase the rate of reaction by decreasing the energy Maxima i.e activation energy.

Schematically can be understood as follows:-

​Essential activators are those which are needed to promote the reaction like the activation energy is very high for a reaction so to lower this we add some activator to lowers the activation energy and proceed reaction with reasonable rate.

Non essential activators are those which are not needed to promote the reaction they might infact decrease the rate of reaction like activation energy is already not high so we don't need any activator to lower it.
