Hydrogen peroxide are produced by cells in an attempt by the body to protect itself from superoxide which is not a good thing to have in body.
Superoxide forms when an electron attaches itself to an oxygen atom making it highly negative. This species can deal damage to DNA and proteins of the body.
So, as a defence system an enzyme called “superoxide dismutase” that gets rid of superoxide by converting it into hydrogen peroxide. Then a new catalyst, catalase is released and breaks the peroxide down into oxygen and water.
