The professionals who deal with health information technology are called healthcare informatics. They deal with management and usage of healthcare information. They work to acquire, store, retrieve and use health related information for improving the quality, efficacy and effectiveness of healthcare delivered. They use healthcare information for developing new trends in healthcare and bio medicine.

There are number of sub branches for health informatics. Some of them are

  • pathology informatics
  • clinical research informatics
  • radio imaging informatics
  • public and community health informatics
  • home health informatics
  • nursing informatics
  • medical informatics
  • consumer health informatics
  • pharmacy informatics

Some of information systems used by health information technology are :

1. Electronic medical health records

2. Computerized Data entry

3. Barcoding for medication dispensing

4. Electronic dispensation records

5. Automated dispensing machine

The health information technology systems can be used by authorised healthcare professionals who have expertise in information technology, computer science, health informatics and biomedical informatics.
