In an history essay you should quote reputable historians, and stand out figuers of the time. You should also ensure your sources are from reputable places such as textbooks and unviersities. Also ensuring you state whether a source is a primary or secondary source. All ideas should be backed by a fact or a quote and it should be referenced if being handed in, though if it is written in an exam this need not be the case however you should know who your quotes are by. However in an english essay you may quote from literary novels of real or fiction characters. You do not need to reference and your ideas need only be refernced by quotes from novels. You should also in include writing texhnqiues such as similies and analogies, context etc.
