In 2001,NLM started an experiment in coding drugs in unified medical language system(UMLS).There were many motives in doing this.Primary is missed synonym in naming the clinical drugs which was becoming problamatic.clinical drugs was becoming an issue in patient safety; HL7 vocabulary technical committee had general agreement on what a clinical drug model should be.It was based on doctors perspective as to what will be his requirement and what he will sent to pharmacy. The dose prescibed will be based on the administered patient. This project was known as the RxNorm project

RxNorm

Rxnorm is basically a catalog of standard names given to clinical drugs and its delivery systems with clear communication between electronic devices and need not depend on the software and hardware compatilbility.

Purpose of RxNorm
