Answer #1

Attitude and practices towards health and illness by Polish community:

Polish refers to people living in Poland. Heritage refers to the attitudes and practices that are transmitted from one generation to another. There are some health-related attitudes and health-related practices that are transfected to the Polish by their ancestors.

Pain perception and treatment:

Polish people often remain reluctant to pain and display no reaction at all. They withhold or keep their pain themselves without communicating to others (stoicism). Some display pain and seek therapy for pain. Some Poland-born individuals perceive pain as an effect that God has provided for their bad behaviour.

Implications in current therapy:

While providing treatment to these Polish communities it should be noted that they first prefer distraction as a means of coping with pain than any drugs. However, they are eager to learn more about the effects of drug therapy and their side effects or adverse effects.

Traditional treatment methods:

Most of the Polish take traditional therapies like homeopathic drugs for their medical problems. Some prefer both the complementary medical therapy and allopathic treatment. However, they rarely communicate this information (traditional drugs) to medical practitioners. They also follow lifestyle changes such as changes in eating pattern, exercise as a form of their traditional treatment plan for their physical problems. Some elderly Poland-born people who have much personal experience (they are not Polish physicians) in treating patients with health problems often provide word-of-mouth medications which are blindly followed by their followers/patients without any question.

The inference from their behaviours for current therapy:

With proper explanation and education, it is easy to make Polish people follow medical orders and treatment plan like lab tests, diagnostic imaging procedures, medications, therapeutic procedures or surgeries. They are more willing to follow their health.

Perception of health workers:

In earlier decades, traditional health professionals (elderly people who provide treatment by word of mouth) are more respected and are given more authority within their community. Poland people often seek medical treatment in the order of hierarchy like first general physicians over general health illnesses and specialists for deeper health issues.

Attitude towards terminal illness:

In traditional medicine, there was no palliative care for people suffering from terminal disorders. Moreover, patients’ were not communicated of their illnesses but their family members. In earlier decades, during terminal illness of a patient, family members remain with the patient for support.

The inference from their behaviours for current therapy:

Family participation in current health practices can be done by appropriate health education and counselling to patients’ and their family members. However, there is a language barrier exist between health workers and patient/family members and often they seek Polish-speaking professionals.
