Answer #1

Silent spring thesis was written by Rachel Carson. The thesis documented the adverse effects caused by indiscriminate use of pesticides on the environment. She documented the ill effects of synthetic pesticides being used. Her thesis drew attention of public and government towards the ise of pesticides. This led to formation of new rules and regulations for pesticide use. It also led to banning of DDT.

Many have criticised the environmentalism and DDT restrictions brought by the silent spring thesis. An outrage was seen in farmers and chemical industries on the ban of DDT use. Many believe that DDT ban have caused serious impact on the agriculture prosperity. It has also led to many deaths due to malaria as DDT could no longer be used to control mosquitoes. DDT was a cheap alternative in under developed and developing areas to control mosquito breeding.

Silent spring thesis was said to be based on overconfidence and unreliable data sources. It was based on incomplete information and knowledge about the environment, ecosystem and the balance between the ecosystem.
