The review of the book ' It's your Ship ' has leadership and management lessons. The book includes the details of leadership and management experiences by Michael Abrashoff. He lived by many principles of leadership and management to increase the performance of the ship Benfold which was well equipped technology but there was potential to increase the performance. He motivated the crew members by giving them the belief that ' It's your Ship '. He was successful in creating a positive impact in the ship's performance with the help of his team and crew members. The book is the summary of his experiences, efforts and outcomes across the two years voyage during which he created the campaign ' It's your Ship'. The book has lessons on leadership including leading by example, listening to the the followers or the team members, creating an environment of trust and support for the team members, calculated risk taking and innovate to improve the skills and performance of the team by not relying just on standard procedures, building the confidence of the team and improving their quality of life.

The captain involved himself in understanding the reasons for low performance or dissatisfaction among team members by studying various factors leading to non performance or leaving the jobs. He practised leading by example as he observed the impact on the followers by inculcating discipline in his lifestyle and performing is goals and duties well. He communicated with his team and crew members to build an understanding with them and know about problems and issues. He found the role of risk taking and not just depending on the standard procedures and maintaining a focus on results. Empowering the team to perform within given parameters increased their confidence and competencies to take up responsibilities. The effect of recognition and feedback in terms of praising the team members created a positive and friendly atmosphere leading to better results. There was no compromise in goals and quality of work from the team members. At the same time, the needs of the team and crew was given proper attention to improve their quality of life and treat them with respect and dignity. Unity and managing diversity were important goals of the leadership process at Benfold.

The book has meaningful lessons on leadership and the role of team building with discipline and focus on excellence. The lessons guide in the process of becoming a leader through motivating the team members and achieving success by giving attention to the people,  improving their potential to achieve the work related goals with confidence and building of trust.
