Severe neck injury and spinal cord injuries occurs as a result of injury to the vertebrae.It causes a peripheral nerve damage.After the severe injury the sympathetic nervous system stress response results in reduced perfusion of gastrointestinal tract and reduced production of gastric mucus to protect the lining.Ulceration and bleeding may develop.Nerve damage may produce a defective urinary bladder function known as neurogenic bladder and neurogenic bowel.In this condition the client cannot control micturation and defecation.
