Gastrointestinal drugs

1.reduction of gastric acid secretion

  • H2 antihistamines: cimetidine, ranitidine
  • Proton pump inhibitors: Omeprazole, Lansoprazole, Pantoprazole
  • Anticholinergics: Pirenzepine, Propantheline
  • Prostaglandin Analogue: Misoprostol

2.Neutralization of gastric acid

  • Systemic: Sodium bicarbonate, Sodium citrate
  • Nonsystemic: Magnesium hydroxide

3.Ulcer protectives

Sucralfate

4.Anti-Helicobacter pylori drugs

Metronidazole, Amoxicillin

INDICATIONS

  • Peptic ulcer
  • bleeding peptic ulcer
  • stress ulcers
  • gastroesophageal reflux disease
  • Zollinger-Ellison syndrome
  • Aspiration pneumonia

Adverse reactions

significant complaints are diarrhoea, headache, muscle and joint pain, dizziness, atrophic gastritis (prolonged use), skin rash.

nursing intervention

  • should administer before food (reduce the absorption)
  • monitor complete blood count, kidney and liver function test.
  • lansoprazole reduces the absorption of drugs like digoxin, ampicillin, ketoconazole, so monitor for the effectiveness of therapy.
  • If significant diarrhoea is present inform physician.
  • breastfeeding is contraindicated while taking this drug.
