Classification : melatonin receptor agonist (sleep agent)

Indications : insomnia or difficulty in sleep

Adverse effects : anaphylactic reactions, nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness, behavioural changes and abnormal thinking.

Nursing implications :

# assessment :

  • Monitor for worsening insomnia
  • monitor for cognitive or behavioral changes.
  • Monitor for liver functions

# interventions :

  • Teach directions for drug administration
  • Avoid taking medicine after a high fat meal.
  • Do not drive after taking medication
  • Avoid alcohol while taking this drug.
  • Report immediately for worsening insomnia, cognitive or behavioral changes, problem with reproductive function.
  • Avoid breast feed while taking this drug.
