Answer #1

1. Machine yield = Number of good parts coming out of the system / total parts produced

= (1200-6)/1200 =0.995 =99.5%

2. Availability = run time / planned production time

Run time = 480 - ( 20+10+30+20) = 400

Availability = 400/480 = 0.8333

Performance Efficiency = Ideal cycle time x total count / run time

=0.25 x1200 /400 =0.75

2. OEE = Yield x performance x availability

= 0.995x0.833x0.75 =0.6218

The OEE can be improved by bringing about improvement in all three areas.

The machine yield can be imoroved by further reducing the number of defective products. If this is brought to 0, the yield can be 100%. The availability can be improved by minimising the time elapsed due to breakdowns ( 50 min). If it is removed completely, the new availability can be 450/480 =0.9375

The performance can be improved by producing more items per unit time, i.e. balancing the line optimally to reduce the idle time per cycle and improve efficiency. It can be improved from 75% to over 90%.

OEE if Yield is 100%, performance is 90% and availability is 0.9375.

OEE = 1 x0.9x0.9375 =0.8437

    The production facility run on one 7.5 hour shift. There is a 15 minute meeting planned at the beginning of the shift and 30 total minutes of setup time each day. 15 minutes of unscheduled equipment failure usually occurs. 380 good parts and 20 defective parts were produced with a standard cycle time of 60 parts per hour. What is the Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE)? A) 93.51% B) 78.56% C) 85.17% D) 72.34%

    Case 15.2    Glaser Machine Works Glaser Machine Works has experienced a significant change in its business operations over the past 50 years. Glaser started business as a machine shop that produced specialty tools and products for the timber and lumber industry. This was a logical fit, given its location in the southern part of the United States. However, over the years, Glaser looked to expand its offerings beyond the lumber and timber industry. Initially, its small size coupled with its...

    HayyaHalwa is an Omanis chocolate producer. HayyaHalwa has a factory with five production lines that can produce a wide range of sweets. HayyaHalwa has just hired 50 operational employees last two months. Due to high demand of chocolate, none of training organized for the employees. Over many years, HayyaHalwa has invested heavily to make their production processes more efficient, with a continual focus on improving efficiency, quality and health, safety and environmental performance. A pharmaceutical company manufactured a prescription drug that contained a tablet inside another tablet. This inner tablet, called a “core,” needed to be in the exact center of the larger tablet, and tolerances were measured in tenths of millimeters. The process was not robust, and the placement of the inner tablet sometimes drifted, requiring the scrapping of off-quality product and the adjustment of the tablet press. This resulted in significant scrap and tablet press downtime. A process change was invented...

    Case 27 To Use or Not to Use? Beaufort Sea Production Company (BSPC) operates a medium-sized oil field on Alaska’s north coast. The field is still producing at its maximum rate, 325,000 barrels of oil per day (BOPD). However, to sustain this rate the company started a waterflood of the reservoir two years ago. Now a capacity bottleneck in the water disposal process is threatening to curtail production. In waterflooding, salt water from the Beaufort Sea is treated to remove...
