Nursing theory is a set of concepts , definitions , relationships, assumptions derived from nursing model to describe ,develop , discriminate and use of present knowledge in nursing .
Nursing theories are used in nursing education and other fields to use the content of theories in basic and advanced practice to become a better nurse ,promote positive outcomes for the patient's ,and ultimately help to move the nursing professional forward .
It helps to provide a patient centered ,quality care to the patient's .
Example of how nursing theory could be used in nursing education :-
Theory of interpersonal relationship developed by Hildegard peplau focuses on the importance of nurse -patient relationship . According to this theory , nurses are able to prove better care to their patients if they build a strong relationship based on mutual respect .
A nurse educator uses this theory in practical field to teach the nursing students how to develop a nurse - patient relationship in the healthcare system . In this they describe about the four phases of the theory step by step along with practical explanation in the ward :-
- introductory phase
- orientation phase
- working phase
- termination phase
In the introductory phase, nursing educator teaches the student how to introduce yourself to the patient and how to interact at the initial stages with the patient .
In the orientation phase ,nursing educator explains the student how to explain the treatment and procedures ,goals to the patient's and how to answer the queries of the patient .
In the working phase ,the nursing educator teaches the student to prepare a nursing care plan by including the patient based on the needs and provide care according to the priority.
In the termination phase ,the nursing educator teaches the student to evaluate whether the goals are attained or not and how to terminate the relationship
