Answer #1

Sickle cell anemia is an autosomal recessive trait.

Genotype of affected individual = Sc-Sc-

Genotype of normal individual = Sc+Sc+, Sc+Sc- (carrier)

According to the question,

Genotype of both parents = Sc+Sc- (carrier)

Parents = Sc+Sc- × Sc+Sc- = F1 generation

Gametes Sc+ Sc-
Sc+ Sc+Sc+ (normal) Sc+Sc+ (carrier)
Sc- Sc+Sc- (carrier) Sc-Sc- (affected)

Total number of progeny = 4

Normal progeny = 1/4

Carrier progeny = 2/4

Affected carrier = 1/4

Mr Candy is a carrier and according to punnet square, the probability of Mr Candy or any other progeny being carrier is 50%, and to be affected is 25%.

Genotype of Mr Candy = Sc+Sc-

Genotype of wife = Sc+Sc+

Progenies of Mr Candy and his wife

Gametes Sc+
Sc+ Sc+Sc+ (normal)
Sc- Sc+Sc- (carrier)

Number of progeny = 2

Normal progeny = 1 = 50%

Carrier progeny = 1 = 50%

There is an equal chance of progeny being normal and a carrier.

Please rate.
