Empathy significance when engaging with team member:
Empathy is required if we want to build a good team that can work together. A team can achieve success only when all the team members are comfortable with each other’s company. Companies organize training sessions to train their employees to teach how to interact with others and how to work together because they know the importance of Empathy at work. People need to react to others happiness and sadness; it will make people comfortable working with those people.
Empathy importance when engaging with patients:
Empathy is the ability to feel with the patient while retaining the ability to critically analyze the situation. It is the ability to put oneself in another person’s circumstances and feelings. Acting on empathy can helpful to understanding ways toward the patient and it involves accurately perceiving the patients situation, perspective and feelings. The nurse need not necessarily have to experience it, but has to be able to imagine the feelings associated with the experience. In empathy process the nurse receives information from the patient with an open, on judgmental acceptance and communicates this understanding of the experience and feelings so that the patient feels understood. This serves as a basis for the relationship. Sympathy is often confused with empathy. In sympathy, the nurse actually feels what the patient feels but in the process objectivity is lost, and the nurse becomes focused on relief personal distress rather than on assisting the patient to resolve the problem. With empathy while understanding the patient’s thoughts and feelings, the nurse is able to maintain sufficient objectivity to allow the patient to achieve problem resolution with minimal assistance.
