Answer #1

Usually there are 2 types of project management, commonly used by companies – Waterfall PM and Agile PM. The primary differences between waterfall project management and agile project management is as follows:

  • Waterfall PM requires a sequential flow of project while agile is an iterative and incremental development.
  • Change management can be easily facilitated in agile model than that in a waterfall one
  • Scalability of project is more compatible with waterfall project management method than with the agile one
  • Waterfall PM works with clear objectives while agile can work with vague objectives
  • Quality of work is more effectively maintained in agile methodology than waterfall methodology

Waterfall project management would be appropriate for project with clearly defined objectives, when the process is defined and no change is anticipated. Agile is the preferred method when the project is quite incremental and unpredictable and change is anticipated on frequent basis.

Hybrid Agile approach is a new type of project management in which the primary features of both waterfall and agile project management are combined. It runs on plan driven principles as per the waterfall model and has flexibility and adaptability to fit any project situation as per the agile approach.

This hybrid agile method uses principles of waterfall model for requirement gathering as well as developing project design. The agile principles are used in the coding and testing phase as well as in deployment of the project. A hybrid agile approach can be quite suitable for the following situations:

  • When a project needs to adapt itself based on the demand and external factors fluctuations
  • When a project has huge and complex UX design implementation
  • When a project neds to capitalize on evolving technologies in the market
