153 PART 2: DEHYDRATION OF 2-METHYLCYCLOHEXANOL-SYNTHESIS, DISTILLATION, AND GAS CHROMATOGRAPHY You will use several techniques in this experiment: fractional distillation, extraction, and gas chromatography are three of the more important ones. NOT The equation and the mechanism for this reaction are given below. You will have your first experience dealing with experimental losses during this experiment. Make note of these as you feel they are occurring. This reaction does not go entirely to completion, and there are minor side reactions that occur. By careful attention to technique, you will be able to minimize mechanical losses, but keep in mind there is no such thing as 100 % yield. Overall Reaction: OH .CHs .CH CH3 H2O HPO,/A Mechanism: :OH :OH CHy CH HyPO/A -HO H CH CHy H H. .CH -H H -H 3-Methylcyclohexene 1-Methylcyclohexene Procedure Assemble a fractional distillation apparatus (refer to the appropriate diagram in the Distillation Experiment). For this experiment the receiver must be a round-bottom flask. Add 10 ml. of 2-methylcyclohexanol into a 50 mL round-bottom flask. Then add about 3 mL. of 85% phosphoric acid and several boiling stones. NOTE: The phosphoric acid is a catalyst and does not enter into the yield calculation. Attach the flask to the distillation apparatus, and, using a heating mantle as the heat Source, begin to heat it slowly. When the contents have begun to boil, watch the vapor 10

13 SN1: Synthesis of tert-Butyl Chloride Alkyl halides can be prepared from their corresponding alcohols via an acid catalyzed substitution reaction. The mechanism of these acid catalyzed substitution reactions are labeled as Syl (substitution, nucleophilic, unimolecular) and S2 (substitution, nucleophilic, bimolecular). Tertiary alcohols follow the Snl route, primary alcohols follow the S2 route, and secondary alcohols can follow either path. Under acidic conditions, the mechanism (Figure 1) of the Sul reaction involves rapid protonation of the alcohol, followed by the...

Experiment Write Up Proposal You will write up a synthesis procedure for one reaction that could be potentially run in a face- to-face Chem 2321 lab session. Your proposal will include an introduction and procedure. The procedure will include step-by-step instructions for running the reaction (including reaction monitoring), work-up. (product isolation and purification), and analysis (characterization). You will need to include sample calculations for percent yield and provide sample spectra analysis. You must upload your proposal as a single document...

The Grignard reagent will then react with methyl benzoate to form triphenylmethanol. Introduction Grignard reagents, such as organomagnesium halides, were discovered in 1910 by French chemist Victor Grignard. The Grignard reaction is one of the most general methods for carbon- carbon bond formation in all of organic chemistry....
