Answer #1

Respiratory failure :

occurs when compensatory mechanisms are NOT able to maintain blood O2 or CO2 levels near normal in the presence of a disease process that sign. impairs lung fx.

2 Types of Respiratory Failure

1. Hypoxemic

(Type 1, Non-Ventilatory) Failure

2. Hypoxemic & Hypercapnic

(Type 2, Ventilatory) Failure

1. Hypoxemic

(Type 1, Non-Ventilatory) Failure

ABG criteria

PaO2 < 55 - 60 mmHg

PaCO2 < 45 mm Hg

2. Hypoxemic & Hypercapnic

(Type 2, Ventilatory) Failure

ABG criteria

PaO2 < 55-60 mmHg

PaCO2 > 50 mmHg

Hypoxemic respiratory failure - is also called type 1 or non-ventilatory failure.

- It is defined by an arterial blood gas

PaO2 of less than 55 to 60 mm Hg. (normal = 80-100 mmHg)

The PaCO2 in hypoxemic respiratory failure is either

- within the normal range of 35 to 45 mm Hg

- or below normal if the person has an increased respiratory rate triggered by the hypoxemia
