Question: Explain the difference between Standard of care, Duty of care and Scope of Practice and their effect on you as a healthcare professional

Standard of care:

  • A standard of care determines the type and result of treatment/service that the patient may expect from the experience with healthcare.
  • The standard of care in tort law is the only degree of prudence and caution expected of a person who has a duty of care.

Duty of care:

  • All healthcare professionals who treat a patient owe them a duty of care.
  • The test for violating the obligation is a peer check. The legislation must judge your profession with your certification against that of a competent body of practitioners.

Scope of Practice:

  • The range of activities that a qualified practitioner of occupation may perform.
  • Establishes the boundaries of an occupation.
