STEPS TO DESIGN CHEMICAL REACTOR

1. Collect Required Data

(Enthalpy of Reaction, Equilibrium Constant and Gibbs Free Energy, Reaction Mechanisms, Rate Equations, and Rate Constants, Heat and Mass Transfer Properties)

2. Select Reaction Conditions

(Chemical or Biochemical Reaction, Catalyst, Temperature,  Pressure,Reaction Phase,Solvent, Concentrations)

3. Determine Materials of Construction

4: Determine Rate-Limiting Step and Critical Sizing Parameters

5: Preliminary Sizing, Layout, and Costing of Reactor

Consider a chemical reactor that has a constant heat release. In this reactor, there are 1-m long cylindrical pipes (L) have inner diameter of 25 mm (D) and Helium gas enters each of the pipe at 400K (Ti) and exits at 800K (Te) that is used to cool the reactor at atmospheric pressure and has mass flow rate as 0.02 kg/s. Determine; (Helium properties at Tf; ρ=0.08 kg/m3; Cp=5200 J/kg.K; µ= 32*10-6 kg.m/s ; k=0.23 W/m.K; Pr= 0.72) the surface...

A reactor, which will contain corrosive liquid, has been design. If the reactor is made of mild steel, the initial installed cost will be $6000, and the useful life period will be 4 years. Since stainless steel is highly resistant to the corrosive action of the liquids, stainless steel, as the material of construction, has been proposed as an alternative to mild steel. the stainless steel reactor would have an initial installed cost of $16000. 7. A bioreactor is treating the NONCONSERVATIVE chemical trichloroethene (TCE). The reactor size is 0.04 m and the flow rate into the reactor is 0.06 L d* (the same as the flow rate leaving the reactor). The concentration of TCE going into the reactor is 40 ng/L and the decay coefficient (K) is 0.07 day Assuming STEADY STATE conditions, determine the TCE concentration (in ng/L, three decimal places) in the bioreactor effluent (solution leaving the reactor). 6) Mass balance and reactor design You have been hired as a high priced consultant to assess the performance of a reactor designed to treat a toxic chemical C to a "safe" level. You are given the following information: Q = 300 m²/d V = 2000 m Influent concentration (Ci) = 500 mg/L Required removal rate = 95% Degradation occurs according to the reaction rate equation r= -dC/dt = kС, where k= 3/d a. An endothermic chemical reaction is conducted in a batch reactor with a heating jacket. A feedstock of 150 Kg is loaded in the reactor at 20o C and the reaction proceeds for 1 hour. At the end of the process, products are at 100o C.. The reaction absorbs 2300 kJ/kg of material in the reactor. Heat is provided by saturated steam. The steam enters the heating jacket at 250oC and fully condenses. The systems has heat losses equal to 1.5...
