1. The head of marketing at a local gym wants to know if they should be selling the SUPER-MAX Nutritional Supplement. The researcher asks people at their gym whether they use the SUPER-MAX supplement and how much weight they can lift. Specifically, the researcher chooses 12 people training with weights and 3 people from the rest of the gym. A positive relationship is found between SUPERMAX use and weight lifting ability. The head of marketing then concludes that they should start selling SUPER-Max because it helps people lift more weight.

2. A medical researcher doesn’t believe the findings of the study in question 1. This medical researcher collects a group of 40 students chosen at random from UBC. They randomly assign 10 students to each of 3 plans:

• Take SUPER-MAX and follow a structured weight training program created by the researcher.

• Follow the same weight training program but without taking SUPER-MAX.

• Take SUPER-MAX and do no weight training. • Don’t take SUPER-MAX and do no weight training

The researcher records how much weight each participant can lift at the start of the study and then again after 2 months of following their assigned program. The researcher finds that students who took SUPER-MAX and followed the weight training program showed slightly more improvement than students who only did weight training. The researcher also found that students who took SUPER-MAX without weight training were able to lift less weight at the end of the study than at the beginning. There was no noticeable difference in the people who didn’t take SUPER-MAX or do weight training.
