This is a bell jar model to study effects of pressure and volume on ventilation. This model has two balloons that represent the lungs, attached to Y shaped tube with elastic band. The diaphragm muscle is represented by a flexible membrane. This membrane is attached on the bottom of the bell jar.

When the diaphragm is pushed upwards, it gets relaxed. This increases the volume inside the balloons/lungs. Due to increased volume, the pressure will decrease. This is on basis of Boyle’s law which states that volume is inversely proportional to pressure in a close system. As pressure increases and volume decreases, the balloons or lungs will deflate due to release of air outside. This is what happens during exhalation in lungs.
