A 12 year old boy is being discharge with a temporary colostomy- what would you describe in your discharge teaching to him and the family about care of this colostomy?

COLOSTOMY

A colostomy is a surgical incision made through abdominal wall to help stool bypass the damage part of colon.

Discharge teaching

  • Check stoma site, note red and moist. Otherwise report to doctor.
  • Monitor for bleeding.
  • Stoma may be swollen immediately after surgery it can be resolve within 6weeks.
  • The pouch that fit well to minimize leakage otherwise redness and irritation occur.
  • Frequently empty the pouch when 1/3full of stool or gas.
  • Change pouch after 3days or any leakage, itching or burning sensation.
  • Avoid gas forming food such as beans, carbonated beverages, broccoli sprout, cabbage, egg, fish, garlic and onion.
  • Avoid drink through straw causing gas.
  • Do not allow the child heavy lifting.
  • Do not allow swim or shower until incision healed.
