In this project, you use the Active Directory Users and Computers tool to create an account in Windows Server 2003/Server 2003 R2 or Server 2008/ Server 2008 R2. You need access using an account with Administrator privileges for this project and Active Directory should already be installed.

To create an account:

1. In Windows Server 2003/Server 2003 R2, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and click Active Directory Users and Computers. In Windows Server 2008/Server 2008 R2, click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and click Active Directory Users and Computers.

2. If necessary, double-click Active Directory Users and Computers in the left pane to display the elements under it. Double-click the domain name, such as accounting.com to display the elements under it, if necessary.

3. Click the Users folder in the left pane to ensure that it is opened. Are there any accounts already created?

4. Click the Action menu or right-click Users in the left pane, point to New, and click User.

5. Type your first name in the First name box, type your middle initial (no period) in the Initials box, and type your last name, with the word “test” appended to it, in the Last name box, for example: Peeletest. Enter your initials, with test appended to them, in the User logon name box, for example: JPTest. What options are automatically completed for you? Record your observations. Click Next (see Figure 10-21).

6. Enter a password and enter the password confirmation. (Make sure the password meets the password specifications set in the account policies, such as being at least eight characters long and including numbers and symbols.) If necessary, click to check the box for User must change password at next logon. This option forces users to enter a new password the first time they logon so that the account creator will not know their password. The User cannot change password option means that only the account administrator can change the user’s password. Password never expires is used in situations in which an account must always be accessed, such as when a program accesses an account to run a special process. The Account is disabled option provides a way to prevent access to an account without deleting it. Click Next.

7. Verify the information you have entered and click Finish.

8. To continue configuring the account, in the right pane, double-click the account you just created, such as Janice M. Peeletest.

9. Notice the tabs that are displayed for the account properties and record them.

10. Click the General tab, if it is not already displayed, and enter a description of the account, such as Test account.

11. Click the tabs you have not yet viewed to find out what information can be configured through each one. What information is already completed on the Account tab?

12. In this step, you make the account you’ve created a member of the global group that you created earlier. Click the Member Of tab. Click the Add button, click the Advanced

button, click Find Now, click the global group you created in Hands-On Project 10-4, and click OK and click OK again.

13. Click OK in the user account Properties dialog box.

14. Close the Active Directory Users and Computers tool.
