In this project, you create a folder and then configure permissions in Windows Server 2003/Server 2003 R2 or Windows Server 2008/Server 2008 R2. (Similar steps apply to configuring permissions in Windows XP/Vista/7.) You will need to work on a disk formatted for NTFS and to have Administrator privileges.

To create a folder and set NTFS permissions in Windows Server 2003/Server 2003 R2 and Server 2008:

1. In Windows Server 2003/Server 2003 R2, click Start and click My Computer or in Windows Server 2008/Server 2008 R2, click Start and click Computer.

2. Double-click Local Disk (C:) (or another disk appropriate to your computer’s setup).

3. In Windows Server 2003/Server 2003 R2 and Server 2008, click the File menu, point to New, and click Folder. You can also, right-click a blank area in the right pane, click the File menu, point to New, and click Folder.

4. Type your initials plus Utilities, such as JPUtilities, and press Enter.

5. Right-click the folder you created and click Properties.

6. Click the Security tab.

7. In Windows Server 2003/Server 2003 R2, click the Add button, and click Advanced. Or in Windows Server 2008/Server 2008 R2, click Edit, click Add, click Advanced, and click Find Now. For all server versions, double-click the domain local group you created in Hands-On Project 10-2. Click OK. You should see a dialog box similar to Figure 10-22.

8. Ensure that the domain local group is highlighted and click the Allow box for Full Control. What other boxes are now checkmarked automatically?

9. Click OK. Click OK again in Windows Server 2008.

10. Close all remaining open windows.
