Describe the psychosexual stages of development.

Step-by-Step Solution

Solution 1

The theory of psychoanalytic says that children during their developing years undergo stages of psychosexual development. The children are autoerotic and derive pleasure from some of their habits. Like they derive pleasure by stimulating some erogenous body parts.

Oral stage begins at birth and goes on till the second year of life. Here, the child is stimulated by the act of biting, sucking, and swallowing. Children derive pleasure from it and it is the primary source as a sensuous experience. The children who have too much or too little of this experience, may show habits like kissing, eating, and smoking.

The anal stage is the age when the child is getting toilet trained. He or she begins to defy the parent by expelling or holding their feces. This can also affect adult behavior. Like an anal-expulsive adult is dirty, extravagant, and wasteful. While the anal-retentive adult is clean, compulsive, and neat.

The phallic stage is characterized by sexual fantasies. In this the child is more affectionate towards the parent of the opposite sex and fears the parent of the same sex. The Oedipus complex begins at this stage.

Children overcome the Oedipus complex, and turn their sexual fantasies of the opposite sex parent to normal societal acceptable affection. Superego develops when the child identifies with the same sex parent.

The age five-twelve is the latency period where the child now at the doorstep of puberty is getting puberty signals. The heterosexual behavior becomes important. The person starts to develop and prepare for marriage and parenthood.
