Life on the earth is majorly divided into three domains, namely Bacteria, Archaea and Eukarya. The domain “Archaea” is not represented by a model organism in the Figure 1-11. The adjoined picture below shows the evolutionary connections between the major domains of life.

The species in the domain Archaea are primitive and can survive in harsh environmental conditions. Hence, they are called extremeophiles. Archaea species cannot be cultivated under laboratory conditions, and so they do not meet the primary requirement to be a model organism for genetic studies.
