Verbs and double-object datives. Any sentence that contains an animate noun as a direct object and another noun as a second object (e.g., “Sue offered Ann a cookie”) is termed a double-object dative (DOD). The connection between certain verbs and a DOD was investigated in Applied Psycholinguistics (June 1998). The subjects were 35 native English speakers who were enrolled in an introductory English composition course at a Hawaiian community college.
