This project enables you to briefly explore the Mac OS X Leopard or Snow Leopard desktop. Depending on the setup of your Mac OS X system, you may or may not need an account and password to access the operating system.

To learn about the Mac OS X desktop:

1. Boot the computer. If you need to provide logon information, enter your Name and Password and click Log In (or press return).

2. Notice the menu options in the menu bar at the top of the screen and record them.

3. Next, observe the bar at the bottom of the screen (by default on most systems). This is called the Dock.

4. Point to each icon (see Figure 1-15 in which the Grab application is started) in the Dock to see what it does and record some of the icon names (note that the contents of the Dock can be customized, and so different systems may have different icons).

5. Click the Go menu at the top of the desktop.

6. How would you access an application from the Go menu?

7. Click an open area of the desktop to close the Go menu.
