In this project, you access tools to find out more about Fedora with the GNOME desktop installed. You also learn some tools that will work from a system prompt on most versions of UNIX/Linux.

To find out more about Fedora:

1. Right-click the Panel in an open spot and click About Panels.

2. What version of the GNOME Panel are you using?

3. Click Close to close the About the GNOME Panel window.

4. Click System in the top Panel and then click About this Computer in the menu. Notice that the System tab in the System Monitor window displays information about the Linux kernel version, the version of GNOME, and hardware data about the amount of memory, processor, and available disk space.

5. Close the System Monitor window.

6. Click Applications in the top Panel, point to System Tools, and click Terminal to access a terminal window so you can enter commands (see Figure 1-17).

7. Type man ls and press Enter (in some UNIX versions you would type help ls). The resulting screen provides documentation (man is the command for manual) about the ls command that is used to list files.

8. Press the spacebar to page through the manual information for the ls command. Keep pressing the spacebar until you reach the end of the documentation.

9. Press q to exit the manual documentation.

10. Type ls -la and press Enter to view information about files, and practice using the ls command.

11. Next, type uname -sr and press Enter to find out the Linux kernel name and version.

12. Type exit and press Enter to close the terminal window.
