In this project, you list the contents of a particular driver file in Fedora Linux but the same procedures apply to many versions of UNIX/Linux. In this example, the sda1 (sda and the number one) file contains driver information pertaining to hard drives.
To view the contents of a device file:
1. In the Panel at the top of the desktop, click Applications, point to System Tools, and click Terminal.
2. Type ls -l /dev/sda1 and press Enter. (Note that this file has different names in different versions of UNIX, such as “ad0h1a” in some versions of BSD UNIX, “disk0” in some BSD UNIX versions, “vg00” in HP-UNIX, and “hd4” in IBM’s AIX.)
3. What devices are represented on the screen display? Record your results.
4. Type exit and press Enter to close the terminal window or close the window by clicking the x in the upper right corner.
