In this project, you learn how to find information about a Mac OS X computer, how to access and use the help resource, and how to open a terminal window in Mac OS X from which to execute UNIX-based commands.

To use the Mac OS X information, help, and terminal window tools:

1. Click the Apple icon in the top left of the menu bar at the top of the screen.

2. Click About This Mac in the Apple menu to view the About This Mac window (see Figure 1-18).

3. What version of Mac OS X are you using? What kind of processor is in the computer?

4. Click More Info to open a window to see more information about the computer.

5. Click System Profiler in the menu bar at the top of the desktop and click Quit System Profiler.

6. Click Help on the menu bar at the top of the desktop.

7. Click Mac Help.

8. Type Using USB devices in the Spotlight search box with the magnifying glass and then press return.

9. Notice the range of topics from which to choose.

10. Close the Mac Help window by clicking the red button (with the x in the middle when you point to the button) at the top left of the window.

11. Click Go in the menu bar at the top of the screen. (If you don’t see Go in the menu bar, point to the icons in the Dock at the bottom of the screen and click the Finder icon.)

12. Click Utilities.

13. Double-click Terminal (use the scroll bar, if necessary to find the Terminal icon).

14. Type man ls and press return to view documentation about the ls command.

15. Press the spacebar to page through the documentation.

16. Press q to exit the documentation display and return to the command prompt in the terminal window.

17. Type ls -la and press return. What is displayed?

18. Click the Terminal menu at the top of the desktop and click Quit Terminal.

19. Close the Utilities window.
