The kinetics of the reaction
was studied in basic aqueous media by Chia and Connick [J. Phys. Chem. 63:1518 (1959)]. The initial rate of I- dis- appearance is given below for mixtures of various initial compositions, at 25°C (None of the solutions initially con tained OI- or Cl-):
Initial composition of I-(M) | Initial composition of OCl-(M) | Initial composition of OH- (M) | Initial rate (mol I- L-1s-1) |
2 X 10- 3 | 1.5 X 10-3 | 1.00 | 1.8 X 10-4 |
4 X 10- 3 | 1.5 X 10-3 | 1.00 | 3.6 X 10-4 |
2 X 10- 3 | 3 X 10-3 | 2.00 | 1.8 X 10-4 |
4 X 10- 3 | 3 X 10-3 | 1.00 | 7.2 X 10-4 |
