Reading review problem. To build an effective knowledge management system, people in organizations must first be willing to share knowledge. Vera-Muñoz, Ho, and Chow (2006) studied the idea of knowledge sharing in CPA firms. They point out that CPA firms should improve knowledge sharing due to increased regulation of the accounting profession, pressures to improve the audit process, and the need to leverage knowledge across an entire firm. They offer three recommendations (pp. 134–35) for increasing knowledge sharing:

• Recommendation 1: While the emergence and proliferation of new information technologies increase the ability of CPA firms to share knowledge, effective knowledge sharing requires more than a technological solution. Successful knowledge sharing further demands an organizational solution that includes the firm’s employees, their practices, and their know-how.

• Recommendation 2: To encourage knowledge sharing, CPA firms need to develop and nurture a culture that simultaneously rewards knowledge sharing and discourages knowledge hoarding as a source of power or job security.

• Recommendation 3: To enhance the prospects of knowledge sharing in team-based settings, CPA firms should seek synergistic ways of combining extrinsic motivation with intrinsic motivation.

Although their study focused on public accounting firms, the recommendations apply to virtually any accounting context.

a. How would a knowledge management system facilitate knowledge sharing?

b. What sources of information overload are accountants likely to experience? What strategies would you recommend for addressing them?

c. Use Steps for Better Thinking to develop a plan for implementing one of the three recommendations.
