Answer #1

Mitosis and meiosis are 2 different process of cell division.

Cell division --- it is the division of a cell to produce daughter cells. It is of two types : 1) Mitosis 2) Meiosis

Mitosis :

1)also known as equal division.

2) it occurs in somatic cells i.e. body cells or diploid cell

3) it results in the production of 2 daughter cells from 1 parent cell at the end.

4) in it the initial number of chromosomes are retained by the daughter cells. This means if parent cell has 2n chromosomes then daughter cells will also have 2n chromosomes.

5) it consists of two stages A) karyokinesis B) cytokinesis

A) karyokinesis -- it is the division of nucleus. It occurs in 4 stages namely : prophase, metaphase, anaphase and telophase.

B) cytokinesis -- it is the division of cytoplasm. It is followed by karyokinesis. It occurs in 2 types i.e. by cell furrow in animals and by cell plate in plants.

6) significance -- it results in growth e.g. healing of wounds.

Reproduction, in case of asexual reproduction.

7) the 2 daughter cells produced are identical to each other and also to the parent cell.

Meiosis

1) also known as reduction division.

2) it occurs in gametic cells or the cells involved in formation of Gametes.

3) it results in production of 4 gametic cells from 1 parent cell at the end.

4) in it the initial number of chromosomes are reduced to half and that is why called as reduction division. If parent cell has 2n number of chromosomes so the cells produced at end of meiosis will have only n number of chromosomes i.e. cells will be haploid.

Diploid cells will produce haploid cells.

5) it occurs in 2 stages. That are A) Meiosis 1 B) Meiosis 2

And each consist of 2 stages i.e. karyokinesis and cytokinesis.

6) in meiosis 1----- karyokinesis is a lengthy or time taking process but is important. Meiosis 1 consist of 4 stages : prophase1, metaphase1, anaphase1 and telophase 1. It results in production of 2 diploid cells but not same as parent cell. It is followed by meiosis 2. The prophase1 of meiosis 1 is lengthy process and consist of 5 stages --- a) leptotene b) zygotene c) pachytene d) diplotene e) diakinesis. Followed by metaphase1, anaphase1 and telophase1 and then cytokinesis.

7) in meiosis 2 ---- the reduction of chromosome number occurs in it. The 2 cells produced in meiosis 1 undergo the 4 stages of division that are prophase2, metaphase2, anaphase2 and telophase2. In telophase2 two nuclei in each cell (produced from meiosis 1) are formed with half the number of parental chromosomes.

It is then followed by cytokinesis and result in 4 haploid cells having half the number of initial chromosome number.

8) the significance of meiosis is in the production of genetic variation among generation that is why the offspring of the parents are not identical to them and will have a combination of both( something new).

So, according to these the answer to the question, the number of daughter cells produced by Mitosis and meiosis is

2 daughter cells by Mitosis and 4 daughter cells by meiosis.
