Mrs. Gregg is a 55-year-old widow who has had an active career as a lawyer. She is an avid reader. She is an independent woman who has had to adapt to many changes in her life. She enjoys crafts and sings in the choir at her church. She has an adult son and daughter, and two grandchildren who visit her frequently. She lives in her own home, a small bungalow in the city. You are assigned to give care and support to Mrs. Grers, who had a stroke two weeks ago. She is paralyzed on the left side and has difficulty speaking. She is able to hear well and can understand when you speak to her. The long-term goals for her care include: 

• regaining mobility regaining speech 

• being as independent as possible 

• preventing complications such as contractures and pressure sores 

You are required to assist her to participate fully in all activities of daily living, and assist to meet her physical, safety, and psychosocial needs 

  1. What information would you want to find out about Mrs. Grers and her home before beginning her care? 

  2. List the types of information that you would expect to obtain from the care plan. 

  3. In the following problem, explain briefly the feeling expressed by the client and the actions for the Personal Support Worker to take.

1. I would like to know the following :

I would like to know about the physical set up of her home where is the washroom, bedroom etc.

Likes and dislikes of Mrs. Gregg.

Her dietary preferences. Is she vegetarian or non vegetarian?

When her children visits her and will they be taking care of her financial needs? It will clearify her financial needs. And to make her financially independent in the long run.

I would like to know more about her friends with whom she shares her emotions. I will make her emotionally stable.

2. Extent of physical movement

Extent of time spent in her hobbies such as reading books.

Has she started with her speech.

3. In the following problem it indicates that Mrs. Gregg had a tough life. She achieved her position with many efforts and is disappointed with the loss of her job. She is also feeling lonely in the absence of her children : To counsell her and made her more socially active by taking her to the park and church where she meets people.

She wants to be self dependent. : Help her at maximum to become self dependent. Making her achieve the desired level of physical movement.
