Mrs. Gold is an 88-year-old widow who is hospitalized for shortness of breath due to congestive heart failure. This is her third hospitalization in the past six months for similar symptoms. Mrs. Gold lives in a small apartment in an assisted living facility. Her son lives nearby and does most of her grocery shopping. She is 5 feet 5 inches tall. Her usual weight is 140 pounds. She states she follows a low-salt diet at home and does not use salt on her food. She also states that her son frequently buys frozen and packaged foods for her that are easy to prepare. During this hospitalization, she is observed to eat less than half of her meals. She complains that the food “doesn’t taste good.” Her son expresses concern that his mother appears much thinner than usual. Her weight on this admission is 127 pounds. Explain possible reasons for Mrs. Gold’s weight loss. How might her heart condition contribute to malnutrition? 2. What dietary recommendations may be helpful to relieve the symptoms that accompany heart failure? 3. 1.The possible reasons for her weight loss I the progression of heart failure.The research has proved that patient with heart failure have decreased blood supply to vital organs including gastrointestinal system. The decreased blood supply affects the absorption and digestion along with nauseating sensation can make patient low desire for food resulting in weight loss.

Emotional disturbance of staying in an assisted living facility than with her son can also be a cause for not eating properly

2.Some of the dietary recommendations which can relieve the symptoms are

  • Encourage to eat fresh fruits ,vegetables whivh are low in sodium content
  • Avoid packed and frozen foods becsuse salt are added as a preservatives
  • Encourage to eat small portion of food
  • Avoid foods which are deep fried,oily,uncooked foods because this can increase nausea
  • Limit water as per order

3.The main strategies to be shared are

  • The packages and frozen foods contain preservatives like salt which can be dangerous in heart failure if consumed daily ,so it has to be substituted with fresh home made foods to lead a quality life.
