The individual can’t see or hear so they won’t be able to communicate effectively, and when you work in healthcare effective communication is key.

Working in the healthcare field, you have to be able to see and hear. Nurses are skilled health care professionals who work directly with patients who are sick. A nurse or a surgical technician who is blind or deaf would not be able to do their job safely and effectively. Apart of nurse job is to listen to heart sounds, chart in EHR, and communicate with other healthcare professionals. Someone who is blind and/or deaf would have a difficult time in a job setting such as healthcare. The visually impaired should be able to work, but I don’t think that healthcare is an appropriate field for them. I know personally that I would not want a nurse or any other healthcare professional who is blind to care for me.

Now a days it is a legal concern if an employer disqualifies a staff on the grounds of disability in non medical set who has a complete knowledge, skills and talents to execute those jobs even when they are disabled. Healthcare profession will be a challenge if a health care worker or a nurse is visually challenged. This becomes an ethical concern that why they can't become a healthcare professionals and offer service. There is still a stigma and fear besides their skill that things can go wrong because the treatment of a patient can be started only after observation.

There is an ethical problem as a healthcare worker when you can not communicate as you should with your patient and have competence to provide necessary treatment. I wanted to be a bit biased and say that someone who is deaf is probably able to be a nurse or someone in healthcare but since language barriers are significant healthcare problems already adding another barrier may not seem ideal to an employer. For the blind, I can't see any way around...

Patient-centered care is a very important part of today’s healthcare setting. When a company focuses on this type of care, they will see many benefits, including increased patient satisfaction, employee job satisfaction and better outcomes. At the heart of patient-centered care is cultural competence. According to Lehman, Fenze, Hollinger-Smith, “A health care professional who has learned cultural competence engages in assistive, supportive, facilitative, or enabling acts that are tailor-made to fit with individual, group, or institutional cultural values, beliefs, and...
