Explain the risk factors for osteoporosis. What can a nurse do to help manage this health condition to restore the patient to optimal health?

Risk factors for osteoporosis are as follows:-

- Age :- Adults loss bone mass as age increases

- Gender :- In women menopause increases risk

- Smoking:- Smoking causes degeneration of bones

- Alcohol :- Alcohol enhances fluid excretion and due to this calcium is lost

- Low BMI :- If BMI will be low then bone mass will be low

- Race :- Different races have different bone density

- Physical inactivity.

Nurse can do the following things to restore the patient to optimal health:-

- She should plan diet which contains:- Low caffeine, low protein and fat.

- She should promote calcium intake and vitamin D intake.

- She should teach weight bearing exercise to the patient to slow the progression .

- She should give health education regarding modification of life style like cessation of smoking and alcohol.

- She should teach the benefits of healthy lifestyle , need for calcium supplements and weight bearing exercises.

- She should manage the pain , risk of injury and risk of constipation.

- She should provide all medication on time and properly.

- She should help the patient in maintaining self care.
