Anyone in the health field should acquire the skills necessary to critically appraise quantitative and qualitative research to evaluate whether or not the research studies are well designed and executed. Research is critically appraised or critiqued to broaden understanding, improve or change practice, and to carefully examine all aspects of the study to judge research validity, reliability, clinical importance/significance, statistical findings, and the findings applications (Schmidt & Brown, 2015). A critical appraisal of a qualitative study should be a balanced appraisal of a study's strengths and weaknesses. The key steps for conducting a critique on a research study are to read the research in its entirety and judge its organization and presentation of the report, examine the problem being studied and its significance and meaning to determine its relevance for nursing practice or in the healthcare field. Some questions you might want to ask related to the research problem would be, “Is the problem significant to nursing, does the purpose narrow and clarify the aim of the study, was the study realistic and replicable in terms of funding, expertise, subjects, facility, equipment, and ethical considerations?” A critical appraisal of a quantitative study nurse would look at the data collection methods, which includes statistical or numerical analysis to determine if the findings have significant validity and reliability to use the findings in clinical practice (Schmidt & Brown, 2015). The nursing practice is all about evidence based practice which includes critiquing studies, integrating and applying the scientific evidence in clinical practice, thus its important to for the data to valid and credible in both qualitative and quantitative.
