Equating status with authority does cause confusion. Compared to other medical professions nurses value their lesser professional status. During clinical, I’ve noticed that patients are constantly asking where the doctor is when the doctor comes in and speaks to them for about five minutes and leave. The media definitely portrays doctors as idols and it’s hard for us nurses to deal with that. The nursing role tends to be left out or completely misconstrued on television. Mona Shatell, PhD, RN, states that television shows don’t show how intellectual and smart nurses have to be and nurses are on the sidelines, while doctors have the best roles (Larson, 2015). Nurses are now actively involved in evidence-based research and are able to integrate their finding in patient care, essentially have more authority. They have the ability to apply, recognize, make decisions and judgments about patient care.
The post describes about the status of nurses in the health care sector.Though they work and care for the patients the entire day, they are not considered by the patients ,where a physician seeing patient for just 5 minutes gives them a wholeness of the treatment.It impacts a nurse when the media portrays the doctors at the highest designated place and as an idol and nurses are misconstrued simply.
