Quality improvement is the uses of all of the interdisciplinary teams involved in patient care to come together to ensure that the best care is provided to the patient (Moran & Johnson, 1992). The nurses are an essential role to the quality improvement team as they are the ones in direct contact with the patients and are able to bring issues to all members of the team to advise what changes should be made. Nurses alone however, cannot make the changes on their own. By collaborating with other members of the health care team all members are able to come together to make a plan that allows this quality improvement to take place (Moran & Johnson, 1992). One example of quality improvement occurred at Duke Hospital in Durham, N. C.. The goal of this quality improvement was to reduce medical errors that occured due to insufficient rounding. By taking one unit and going back to the basics with nursing staff, technicians, and doctors the unit was able to reduce the amount of preventable medical errors just by ensuring that communication and rounding was consistent across the board (Children's Hospital Association, 2014). Quality improvement is not always an elaborate process and often just requires coming together as a team to improve patient care.
